CAINBudget, explained for beginners
CAINBudget is a hard spending limit for each AI agent: one cent over and the spend is refused.
What it is
AI agents spend money: model calls, cloud resources, purchases. Without a limit, one agent stuck in a loop can run up a bill overnight. CAINBudget holds a budget for each agent, for example $50 a day.
Before the agent spends, it asks CAINBudget. Inside the budget: ALLOW. Over it, even by one cent: DENY, with the reason. An agent with no budget at all is denied (fail-closed). Real spends are reserved atomically, so two requests arriving at the same moment cannot both squeeze under the limit. Every answer carries a signed receipt.
An everyday comparison
A prepaid card for each agent. When it's empty, it's empty, however the agent asks.
How it works, in 4 steps
- Give the agent a budget: an amount and a window (day, month, or total).
- Before spending, the agent asks for the amount.
- ALLOW if it fits, DENY if it doesn't, with a signed receipt.
- Reserved amounts count against the budget until committed or released.
